Scouting as a "Social Glue"
Diana Slabu
National Organisation of the Romanian Scouts
The world we live in might bring more and more conflicts and division in the upcoming years. In this context, it is important that we keep in mind the pivotal role scouting plays in bringing social cohesion in our communities.
Whether we’re with our cub scouts around the campfire or in our elected role in a board meeting, scouting is open to all, and we need to ensure that it remains that way.
Hate and misinformation divides and polarises societies, ruins friendships, and can even turn siblings against each other. In this context, it is extremely important to ensure that scouting remains a safe space for everyone, where dialogue can take place in a peaceful manner, communication is constantly improved and ideas are listened to, discussed in a constructive and respectful way, and where, essentially, peace is actively cared for and cultured.
It is also equally important to also remind ourselves, our partners and our friends in scouting of the values that unite us, no matter the circumstances. The feeling of belonging to a community is among the strongest motivations that many of us have for being members of this movement for many years. Taking this into account, keeping this community strong, maintaining trust in interpersonal and institutional relationships, in spite of potential disagreements, is more important than ever.
In scouting we build communities through working with children of any background, supporting them to form long-lasting friendships, to work in teams and to lead from a very early age. Real inclusion prevents extremist views and is a solid foundation for empathy and understanding of socio-economic challenges commonly found around us. Supporting our local groups in becoming more inclusive is extremely important for national organisations in the upcoming years.
Scouting unites instead of polarizing. Scouting is a safe environment where everyone can feel comfortable to share and challenge ideas, develop critical thinking, be themselves, while always treating everyone with respect, thus constructing a culture of peace. Introducing dialogue for peace, communication techniques and Human Rights Education in our educational methods and objectives will give our members the necessary tools to navigate difficult conversations in a respectful way. This is all the more relevant when negotiating and mediating conflicts in an international setting, adding an additional need for cultural sensitivity to the skills and competencies mentioned above.
Scouts are active citizens, not just reacting to the needs of society but being actively involved in identifying problems and being part of the solution. We are trustworthy and constructive in their approach, thus having the opportunity to unite many different stakeholders in society around common goals. Using our voice to advocate for our values and have an impact on the world is essential, especially for young people, as the main stakeholders in a youth-led movement.
